They don't stop embers, and they don't fireproof a house. For an actual bushfire survival plan and this year's dates, the NSW RFS website is the right place to check what's current for your area.

The coast is hard on solar panels and paintwork — here's why

Salt in the air does real things to a property, and it does them faster the closer you are to the water.

Solar panels lose real output as salt and dust build up on the surface — not something you can usually see from the ground, but it adds up over time. Exterior paint and render face the same exposure: salt staining and corrosion set in faster within the first few hundred metres of the surf than they do further inland.

Within ~3km of the coast

Exterior paint manufacturers' own guidance points to washing and inspecting surfaces roughly every 6 months in this zone.

Further inland

The same guidance stretches out to roughly every 1–2 years once you're clear of direct coastal exposure.
